Area woman celebrates 104 years of life
Eugenia “Gene” York Morton was born in the Pleasant Glade community in Van Zandt Country in the area that is now Purtis Creek State Park.
After rolling through regular season competition with ease, Meridith McDonald and Madalyn Mikkelsen capped off an amazing year by winning the Class 3A University Interscholastic League State Championship Tuesday in Cross Examination Debate.
It is the first state championship in cross-examination for Athens ISD.
An 18-wheeler carrying scrap metal lost control of its trailer Wednesday morning as it tried to turn onto Loop 7 from State Highway 19. The cab remained upright, while the trailer turned to the side, spilling debris on to the roadway. The accident closed the ramp for several hours. No one was injured in the wreck.
In less than 20 minutes, the Chandler City Council wrapped up months of prep work, and helped the city move forward for the next couple of years.
During Tuesday's regularly-scheduled meeting, council unanimously approved two allocations of Chandler Economic Development Corporation funds, and a separate agreement with the Brownsboro-Murchison-Chandler Youth Foundation.
Undocumented immigrants costs jails large amounts
Changes in the way the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency deals with detainees has altered the number housed in local jails.
ICE is the principal criminal-investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security and one of the three department components charged with the civil enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws.
Tax allocations for Athens down
That Athens saw its first decrease in sales-tax allocations of 2014 in March is not all bad news, according to information from State Comptroller Susan Combs’ office.
The city’s allocation of $354,161.28 was down 12.37 percent from March of 2013, but was the second-highest March on record.
HC SHERIFF WANTS PUBLIC INVOLVED
Responding to the increased number of citizens wanting to assist law enforcement officials, and build a stronger partnership in the fight against crime, Sheriff Ray Nutt is informing Henderson County residents how they can become more involved.

Fatal shooting suspect arrested
The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office is reporting that a Kemp woman was killed in what authorities are calling a domestic dispute, and a man has been arrested. The unidentified woman was shot and killed Tuesday night, March 11.
Theater director ends 25 years
Former owner of the Athens Review, Richard “Dick” Dwelle said it best: “There are so very many people who have made significant contributions to this community, but it would be difficult to find anyone who has had a greater impact for good on the youth of Athens than Dennis Gilmore.”
After 25 years as Executive Director of The Henderson County Performing Arts Center, Gilmore announced his retirement from HCPAC.
