Athens — Athens Independent School District will most likely will be in the hunt for a new superintendent.

Dr. Robert Steeber is negotiating with the AISD Board of Trustees to leave the district to accept a position with Region 11.  Steeber has completed one year of a 3-year contract with the district.

Steeber confirmed he has been offered the position of deputy executive director for administration operations at the Education Service Center for Region XI.

“It’s too early to make a statement. Nothing has really happened yet. We are under negotiations,” Steeber said.

The school board is scheduled to meet on Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in the District Support Center Board Room located at 104 Hawn St.

Steeber was offered the position of superintendent for AISD after Dr. Fred Hayes resigned in May,  2011, to head up the Nacogdoches Independent School District.

Steeber beat out 62 candidates to take the top spot at AISD. He came to Athens from S&S Consolidated Independent School District.

Steeber said he has preliminarily accepted the position with Region 11.

“I will not be able to completely accept the position until after the Oct. 18 school board meeting, unless they call a special meeting,” he said.
