Keep Athens Beautiful celebrates 25 years

Athens — Keep Athens  Beautiful (KAB) celebrated 25 years with a banquet at Athens Country Club last Friday night. The evening was hosted by Darwin Winfield (not pictured). Peggy Rhodes (left) presented Hugh Armstrong (second from the right) the Margaret Myers Award. Carol Morton (far right) presented two people with the Hall of Fame Award — Jerry Wadell and Victory Roberts (second and third from left).     The Athens Municipal Water Authority Board is moving closer to a new contract with the City of Athens, Executive Director Wylie Pirkle said Wednesday.
    The authority met Wednesday in a meeting, which also included an executive session concerning the litigation between the two parties.

    C.W. Tidmore served as Mayor of Athens from 1960 through 1962 and was a proud supporter of the city's claim of being home to the original hamburger.
    The former mayor, contractor and Lion died Wednesday at East Texas Medical Center in Athens. He was 91 years old.

  • 7-10 teen camp.jpeg HELP Center to sponsor camp for teens

    It's all about kids who just want to have fun.
    The Henderson County HELP Center will again this year sponsor the Henderson County Healthy Teen Camp. The camp is scheduled for Aug. 7 and Aug. 8 for 6th through 12th grades.
    The Henderson County HELP Center will present an important aspect, which is learning how to balance between rights and responsibilities with Life Skills Training.

    The oversized fans at the Henderson County Regional Fairpark Complex will be working overtime next week during the Athens Summer Jubilee horse show.
    Temperatures are often in the upper 90s on show days, but the human and equine participants now feel the benefits of improvements made to the 4,500 seat coliseum in recent years.

    The Athens Police Department advises citizens that an officer will be checking for improperly placed garage sale signs on Saturday.
    Police Chief Buddy Hill said the department has received complaints that some of the signs have been hung where they’re not allowed according to the city ordinance governing the sales.

    In response to surveys sent out to members of the community the City of Murchison is seeking ways to provide more festivals and events.
    “Everyone has wanted more festivals,” Mayor Deanna Benson said. “We have the money in the general funds to do something like that. It will help bring the community together a little bit better and let everyone get to know one another.”
