MALAKOFF — A car that drove into the front of Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church located on County Road 1703 caused significant damage Thursday afternoon.
Carol Lennard, church secretary, was in the building alone when the incident occurred. She said she heard a large banging noise but wasn’t sure what was going on until she saw the car had plowed into the front of the building. The driver, who has not been identified, was still in the car with his foot stuck on the accelerator.
According to Lennard, the tires were still spinning and she didn’t know if the man driving was dead or alive. Malakoff Police were the first to responded to the 911 call.
She said the driver of the car was not conscious when he was airlift to an area hospital. His condition was not known at press time.
Malakoff, Payne Springs and Trinidad volunteer fire departments help to extinguish the fire. Malakoff Assistant Fire Chief Bubba Matthews said he was not yet sure what caused the car to catch the building on fire. The investigation was continuing through the afternoon.
