JACKSONVILLE —
The body of a 56-year-old Larue man who slipped into the Trinity River was pulled from the water Thursday morning, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Warden Captain Gary Dugan said.
William Blake Nix was fishing with friends near the Farm-to-Market Road 85 bridge that spans the river at the Henderson/Navarro County line, when the accident occurred.
Dugan said Nix had been fishing on the Navarro County side of the river when his fishing line became tangled.
Nix went down the bank to salvage weights from the line, but was soon seen face down in the water.
Navarro County Sheriff Les Cotton said one of Nix friends, John Creel, Jr. told authorities he attempted to reach Nix, but that Nix’s body was under water.
Initial efforts to call 9-1-1 were unsuccessful due to a lack of a signal, but the distress message was received shortly after 5 p.m.
TPWD game wardens from Navarro, Henderson and Freestone counties were dispatched to the scene, along with the Navarro and Henderson County Sheriff’s Department personnel. Recovery of the body was slowed because of a difficulty in finding a suitable place to enter the water in that section of the Trinity, Dugan said.
The search for Nix remains continued into the night and resumed Thursday morning. At 9:20 a.m., Nix’s body was found, about 15 to 20 feet from where he had slipped in the previous day.
Assistance to the game wardens and lawmen was also provided by the Seven Points and Chatfield volunteer fire departments.
