The Malakoff Police Department arrested a 27-year-old man on multiple charges early Friday after a brief pursuit.
Ernest Eugene Smith was held in the Henderson County Jail on Friday afternoon for evading arrest and detention, possession of less than one ounce of a controlled substance, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana, failure to appear and traffic warrants. Total bond on Smith was set at $12,426.
Malakoff Police Chief Billy Mitchell said a patrolman who was looking for a possible burglary suspect stopped Smith on Martin Street. Smith, who had existing warrants, fled on foot. After a brief chase, Smith was taken into custody. Smith was transported to jail by MPD Officer Robert Siegmund.
According to Henderson County Sheriff’s Office dispatch records, the pursuit was reported at 1:15 a.m. Police from Trinidad and Log Cabin were also alerted concerning the pursuit.
Smith was arrested in March 2011 in connection with a burglary at W.T. Cope Construction on State Highway 31 West at Loop 7 in Athens. He was placed on deferred adjudication for that charge in December of that year.
