Special to the Review
The Athens Review
The Memorial Day Meeting of the Payne Cemetery Association was held on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Vegie Darden was honored for building a new fence around the cemetery. Also honored was the Hughes Family who has 41 family members buried in the cemetery. Polly Shumate told the group about the history of the family, and showed a picture of the original Hughes home. They were early settlers in the Stockard-Pickens-Spur community.
At the meeting, the finances, upkeep and ongoing maintenance were discussed. As always, donations for the continued upkeep of the cemetery were encouraged. The bylaws were changed to allow the reserving of plots and multiple burials in a single plot were the burials include cremation.

We invite all to drive by and see what we believe is the most beautiful country cemetery in Henderson County.
