Athens — Mabank—Brookshire Grocery Co. kicked off grand opening activities at its new 37,200-square-foot store, located at 1200 S. 3rd St. in Mabank on Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy has a new fuel center kiosk to stock automotive items, candy and soft drinks, among other items. The fuel center offers unleaded gasoline at competitive prices.

The new store boasts a drive-through window for its pharmacy department. The pharmacy offers name-brand and generic prescriptions, as well as a large variety of over-the-counter medications, and health and beauty items. The pharmacy accepts most insurance plans.

New gondolas, cases, coolers and other equipment enhance the atmosphere and service in every area of the store.

From the new rotisserie, stove and fryer in the deli, to the new bread slicer, mixer and oven in the bakery, and from the new meat slicer, table wrapper, grinder and scale in the market, to new checkstands on the front end—the entire shopping experience has gone from good to great.

The bakery is much larger than the former location’s bakery, and makes tortillas fresh every day.  The deli is also larger, with a seating area for customers. The store has been outfitted for free WiFi.

“New produce islands and frozen foods coolers, as well as new seafood and dairy cases, give our customers greater selection than they’ve ever had,” said Store Director Scott Andrews. “About a dozen aisles offer 1,400 linear feet of groceries and general merchandise, many of which we haven’t been able to carry before.”

The building exterior is designed in earth tones—brown, tan and green—and features brick and stone veneer, combined with stucco and metal accents. The storefront also displays the company’s Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy logo and green-leaf icon.

The new store will allow for future expansion on the west side of the building. Plans and site work began last winter, with officials holding a groundbreaking ceremony in March, 2012.

Workers will begin demolishing the old 28,300-square-foot store in early 2013. The company intends to use this space for additional customer parking.

Brookshire’s built its original store in 1980, completed a renovation and expansion project in 1993, and constructed the fuel center in 1999.

Store hours are now 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

During the grand opening celebration, the store will be giving away iPads and reusable bags in a special grand opening sweepstakes.

The pharmacy will offer YourPoints coupons, with new or transferred prescriptions. A long list of hot prices and eDeals are planned for November and December.
