Wreck sends one to hospital
A Palestine man was hospitalized on Tuesday after the car he was driving collided with a delivery truck on State Highway 19 south of Athens.
The extent of the man’s injuries was not available at press time.
CodeRED funding approved
This month, the East Texas Council of Governments Executive Committee approved a fifth year of funding CodeRED, a reverse emergency notification system, for the East Texas region as a part of its public safety program.
Athens is one of several cities to receive funding for the emergency system. Athens is scheduled to receive $2,871 for 9,375 annual minutes.
The CodeRED system, funded by a Homeland Security grant, is a telephone communication service that allows the county/city Emergency Management Coordinator to quickly notify citizens about emergencies.
Athens band recognized
Members of the “Pride of the Hornets” band have earned All-Region Band Honors for 2013.
Over 800 students from across East Texas competed this past Friday, Dec. 13 for the prestigious honor band.
Traffic stop leads to arrest
Athens Police Department traffic stops yielded two arrests for possession of drugs on Monday night, according to police reports.
The first involved Linda Luann Motl, 42, who was charged with possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional facility and driving while license invalid. She was released on Tuesday, after posting $3,500 bond.
A warm Christmas
Park Highland Nursing Center residents' feet won't get cold this winter thanks to students from the Life Skills Class at Athens High School.
A group of Athens Life Skills students may have made some long term friends with the caring adults at Park Highland Nursing Center Tuesday. The group passed out over 164 pairs of socks to the nursing center residents.
Mardi Gras coming to Athens
Ready for a little Mardi Gras fun?
The Athens Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its annual banquet and this year’s theme is Mardi Gras.
The event will be held Friday, Jan. 24 at the Athens Country Club. Tickets are $40 each or $300 for a table of eight.
Several surprises are being planned for the event. Some of the announced activities include a live and silent auction and a Mardi Gras mask decorating contest.
Renberg named fire chief
The man who has been serving as Henderson County Fire Marshal can remove interim from his title.
The Henderson County Commissioners Court voted to install Shane Renberg for a full two-year-term that begins January 1, 2014 and ends December 31, 2015.
Renberg has been serving his second stint as interim fire marshal after taking over for Darrell Furrh after his resignation on May 1 Renberg was interim fire marshal in 2010, in the period between the resignation of John Holcomb and the hiring of Furrh.
United Way fundraisers planned
The Henderson County United Way campaign for 2013-2014 is well underway and a couple of fundraising events are planned for the new year.
Chairman Tony Kalawe said the organization has received close to $40,000 in donations towards its goal of $185,000.
While donations are still rolling in, two events are planned to start the new year that will help the organization reach its fund-raising goal.
The Harlem Ambassadors will challenge area business leaders, political figures and other members of the community in basketball action at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16.
AIS wins district championship
Students from Athens Intermediate School competed on Dec. 3 and Dec. 5 against seven schools in district University Interscholastic League competitions.
Athens temperatures haven’t been exactly in the deep freeze for the past couple of weeks, but residents have awakened to an unusually long string of freezing temperatures.
