Athens — A 21-year-old man escaped serious injury when the pickup he was driving veered from the roadway and struck the Foot Clinic of East Texas on Wednesday night.

According to information from the Athens Police Department, the wreck occurred shortly after 9 p.m. as Anthony Lee Barrows was traveling south on South Palestine Street in a 1993 Ford Ranger pickup.

Police said Barrows developed an undisclosed medical problem, and lost control of the pickup.  The vehicle crossed an open area, and entered the yard of the Foot Clinic on Maryland Drive, which intersects with South Palestine from the west.

Assistant Chief of Police Rodney Williams III said the pickup damaged the railing in front of the building, but did not penetrate the structure. Once Barrows was out of the pickup, a wrecker service was contacted to remove the vehicle.

Officer Dustin Cook worked the wreck with the assistance of Officer Marshall Passons, Sgt. Jason McEntire and Cpl. Dana Dykes.

The Athens Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, and responded with its Quint ladder unit and another fire engine.
