County residents can now recycle glass without going to Tyler

Athens — Henderson County residents who formerly had to take glass items to places such as Tyler for recycling now have a local option.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Ken Geeslin has entered a contract with Strategic Materials of Houston that adds glass recycling to the other services offered at his headquarters in Larue, located at 9769 CR 4719. A large dumpster is now located on the property for bottles, jars and small glass containers.

“It’s available at no charge, and it doesn’t cost the county anything to provide the service,” Geeslin said. “It’s something we’re able to offer the people of Henderson County. We’re not restricting it to just Precinct 4.”

Finding a company to take the glass items took some investigation, Geeslin said.

“Back in 2011, when we started the recycling program with Allied Waste, the main complaint that I had from a lot of constituents is that they couldn’t bring glass,” Geeslin said.

Allied officials told Geeslin that they wouldn’t be able to offer glass recycling in the foreseeable future. Geeslin began to look for an alternative and found Strategic Materials, which has a location in Midlothian.

“It’s basically for bottles and glass jars. They’ll take colored glass, but no windshields or plate glass,” Geeslin said.

Once the trailer is hauled away from the precinct headquarters, it is taken to Midlothian. Strategic Materials will use the glass at its fiberglass plant.

According to Strategic Materials’ website, the business is the largest glass recyler in North America. The company recycles 2 million tons of glass each year.

“So, it’s good to know that not only is our glass  being recycled, we also know what it’s being used for,” Geeslin said.

Precinct 4 also offers a place for customers to bring motor oil and oil filters. Geeslin said he expects to see increased use of that part of the facility  now that the mowing season is nearing its peak.

    On May 13, following an investigation initiated in January by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office investigators, Uleyses Roberts, 45, and Dijon Howard, 25, were arrested by a task force of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. The men were charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

    The Henderson County unemployment rate of 5.7 percent was an increase of .4 percent over June. The county saw both an increase in the size of the workforce and the number without jobs.
