Sweet, dude: AEDC lures business from Cali

Med-Logics gets approval for incentive deal

Athens — Athens Economic Development Corporation negotiations with a California company have paid dividends for the city.

An AEDC incentive package for Med-Logics of Venice Hills, Calif., won approval of the Athens City Council on Monday. The company plans to bring its entire operation to Athens, AEDC President and CEO Brian Malone said. Key personnel from Med-Logics’ California operation will be moving to Athens to help them begin their operations as quickly as possible.

Med-Logics was founded in 1992, and specializes in manufacturing opthamology laser blades used in eye surgery and related technology.

“We actually got started back in January on some recruiting trips to California,” Malone said. “We had subsequent follow-ups, and they made subsequent visits to Athens.”

Many California businesses have been looking at moving from the state to escape increasing taxes on corporations there. The state is a prime target for cities such as Athens that wish to attract new industry, but, Malone said, there is tough competition.

“We’re pleased that they enjoyed Athens and like Athens, and have chosen us over another community in North Texas to be their future home,” Malone said. “They will move their entire operation from California to Athens.

“The company had been leasing property in California, and has already notified the property owner of the planned move,” Malone said. “The AEDC board has worked quite extensively with the company over the last year-and-a-half, including making a trip out there to get a better handle on their operation. After looking at their operation, and everything that it encompassed, this incentive proposal came out.”

The AEDC proposal includes a 4.11-acre tract of land at the Athens Industrial Park and a performance agreement.  The company has 20 employees at its California facility, and is working on new products that could expand the business.

“They also have one that is about to come out on the market that they really expect to increase their employment more than the performance agreement calls for,” Malone said.
