Athens —
Anyone could tell winning the Breeding Swine competition at the Henderson County Livestock Show hasn’t become old-hat to Landrey Rogers by the look on her face.
The 12-year-old from LaPoynor FFA swept Grand Champion and Reserve Champion during the 53rd edition of the contest, and took first place in a third class for good measure.
Last year, Landrey also took home reserve and grand awards. In 2011, she had to be content with just the Grand Championship buckle.
“I’m excited,” Landrey said after the championship drive. “I didn’t know if they’d win.”
Landrey said her favorite was the black-and-white Reserve Grand.
“She’s mine,” Landrey said. “The Grand Champion is my sister’s pig.”
Her sister, Libby Rogers, is a little young to be showing hogs, but she works hard getting ready for the show, as well. Landrey’s father, Brad Rogers, teaches the Ag classes at LaPoynor, and helps plenty of FFA students get ready for the show.
Tuesday night began with Rogers winning the class for breeding swine under 6-months-old. She followed up with win in the 6-month to 8-month-old class. That was the swine that won the Grand Championship drive. In the class for pigs more than 8 months old, she also dominated.
After the wins, Landrey had to settle for second in the Junior Showmanship competition. Cody Rayburn of Horizon 4-H walked away with the buckle. The Senior Showmanship winner was Blaine Brumfield of Brownsboro FFA.
The judge for the competition was Ricky Thompson, Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Agent for Agriculture in Fort Bend County.
Thompson complimented the class of swine presented by the Henderson County youth, and offered tips in showing their animals along the way.
