The Athens Review
A 22-year-old Henderson County Jail inmate died Saturday after apparently hanging herself in her cell.
The woman, of Rockport, was being held for San Patricio County authorities for offenses in Aransas Pass. Charges against the inmate included theft of property ($1,500 to $20,000) and engaging in organized criminal activity.
Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said the woman was in a separation cell when she was discovered, shortly before midnight Saturday. She had apparently hagged herself with a bedsheet.
Records show the inmate had been in the Henderson County Jail since March 13.
Because the woman was unresponsive, paramedics were called to the scene. The inmate was transported to East Texas Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Nutt said the Texas Rangers Office has been called to conduct an independent investigation of the death.
