ATHENS —
Car burglars were busy in Athens again over the weekend with several vehicles hit.
APD received a report Friday that vehicles had been struck at Farmer’s Diesel Repair at 103 S. Guantt St.
Sgt. Brett Morman spoke to the complainant who said someone had opened the hoods of five vehicles and removed the batteries.
Lt. Mike Davis said car batteries are often stolen to sell for a few dollars each at salvage yards.
“These were probably good batteries that will still function, but they probably just stole them to sell the cores,” Davis said.
There were also batteries taken from Sudden Link at 518 E. Corsicana St. There allegedly were batteries taken from there as well. The gate at the Sudden Link location was broken to gain entry, reports said.
A criminal-mischief complaint was called in Friday from the Athens Post Office in which a windshield was broken out of a postal delivery vehicle. Officer Billy Westover took a report of criminal mischief ($50 to $500) in relation to the break-in.
Officers were also dispatched to Bryson Street where a resident reported that someone had shot three holes into his windshield and on Park Drive, where a back window was broken out.
The recent reports are the latest in a growing number of vehicle break-ins and vandalism.
