ATHENS —
Athens High School’s UIL Literary competitors hauled in some of the top medals at the district meet last week.
The school nabbed top honors in everything from Speech, Calculator Application, Math, Current Events and much more.
UIL Coach Merna Bass said all the students did a great job in representing Athens High School.
“I am very proud of all of these kids,” Bass said. “They all worked very hard, and did a great job. The ones who advanced will have to step it up a notch at Area competition.”
Students had to place first through third to advance to the next level. Top team awards for Athens were Speech, Calculator Applications, and Mathematics. Current Events, Literary Criticism and Spelling and Vocabulary were second place finishes.
Individual honors include:
• Informative Speaking – Stephen Grant 1st; Jose Castaneda, 4th; Jessi Williams, 4th.
• Persuasive Speaking – Russell Frautschi, 4th; Katie Stark, 4th; Matt Morelli, 5th.
• Poetry Interpretation – Sam Haynie, 1st; Katrina Johnson, 4th.
• Prose Interpretation – Solomon Skiles, 1st; Jessi Williams, 2nd.
• Lincoln Douglas Debate – Matt Hill 4th.
• Literary Criticism – Willie Hadnot, 3rd.
• Mathmatics – Purvi Prajapati, 1st; Haley Jezek, 2nd; Taylor Fitzgerald, 3rd.
• Calculator Applications – Haley Jazek, 1st; Purvi Prajapati, 2nd; Derek Davies, 5th.
• Current Issues – Jose Castenada, 3rd; Russell Frautschi, 6th.
• Computer Applications – Joseph Ramierz, 3rd; Khush Parmar, 4th.
• Editorial Writing – Taylor Fitzgerald, 5th.
• Science – Taylor Fitzgerald, 6th.
• Social Studies – Jose Castaneda, 4th; Mat O’Brien, 5th.
