• Lake Athens Baptist Church, on Farm-to-Market Road 2495, will host a Candlelight Lord’s Supper service in the church sanctuary at 7 p.m. For more information call 903-675-4008. Child Care will be provided.
Thursday, Dec. 24
• Cross Roads United Methodist Church, on 14270 Farm-to-Market Road 59, will hold a Candlelight Service at 6 p.m. For more information call the church at 903-489-9119.
Sunday, Dec. 27
• Johnson Chapel AME Church will host its Family and Friends Day beginning at 3 p.m. The speaker will be the Rev. Corey Jenkins, of Cedar Fork Baptist Church Trinidad.
Thursday, Dec. 31
• Lake Athens Baptist Church, on Farm-to-Market Road 2495, will host its annual churchwide Watch Night Party in the fellowship hall beginning at 7 p.m. There will be games and snacks available for all members and their guest. For more information call 903-675-4008.
Regular events
• Daytime Disciples is an informal meeting of adults of all ages to have breakfast, fellowship, and play games. It is held on the last Tuesday of each month, in the Fellowship Hall of First Christian Church, Athens. Just bring a breakfast dish, and all else is furnished. For more information call 903-675-3730.
• Lake Athens Baptist Church provides a unique opportunity for children to learn to sign and play bells each Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. This special time is available for children ages four through sixth grade.
• The Sewing Ladies of Lake Athens Baptist Church will meet in the fellowship hall to sew items for local nursing homes each Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to participate. Please call Lake Athens Baptist church at 903-675-4008 for more information.
• Every Tuesday is a special day at South Place Nursing Home. Ladies from Lake Athens Baptist Church treat the residents to manicures.
• West Place Nursing Home has a birthday party for all residents who have a birthday during the month, on the third Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. Lake Athens Baptist Church is pleased to play host to the party and would like to invite all who are interested in making a difference in the lives of our senior citizens to participate.
• Hope Community Church of Murchison holds a Backyard Bible Club the first Sunday of each month at the Murchison Baseball Field at 4 p.m. This free event includes games, food, puppets and skits.

Church construction continues
Above, the Rev. Leon Wallace of Faith Church views the base of the steeple which was salvaged after his church was one of three in Athens which fell victim to arsonists in January. The steeple sits in front of a new church building being constructed by Cooper Plastering. The new building is estimated to have a worth of about $500,000 when completed.

Man eludes deputies
The Henderson County Sheriff’s Department continued to search Thursday for a man who eluded law officers in an automobile pursuit and foot chase near Coffee City.

Beekeeper says we are reason for honeybee decline
Honeybees bring more than just a taste of honey to the world, beekeeper Dick Counts told the Athens Rotary Club, Thursday.
Counts is the executive director of the East Texas Beekeepers Association. He says honeybees are amazing creatures that are among the most unusual and useful of God’s creations. -

Services for Elma Jo Asher will be on Saturday, July 31, 2010 in Tomball. Burial will be in the Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
