• Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to the elderly for Meals on Wheels. The local route takes about an hour to run. For more information contact Gladys Bowman at 903-675-8577.

• The Texas Game Warden Museum at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is looking for individuals interested in volunteering their time to open the museum on Saturday and Sundays to visitors. For more information call 903-670-2251.

• Caring Hearts Hospice, at 1837 West Main in Gun Barrel City, are looking for volunteers. For more information and to register for a training session call 903-887-4788.

Wednesday, Dec. 16

• Seniors of Henderson County will hold its monthly meeting at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, on 2101 East College Street, at 11 a.m. The guests will be Athens High School choir director Kern Railsback and the choir. Free glucose and blood pressure checks by A Trinity Valley Home Health Services will be provided. For more information call Yvonne Crumpton at 903-677-6839.

• Genesis HospiceCare and First Presbyterian Church will hold the final meeting in the five-week series “Coping with Grief during the Holidays” at the church, on 306 East Tyler Street, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited to the free session. For more information call 903-675-4730.

Thursday, Dec. 17

• The City of Murchison will hold a community Christmas celebration from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The event will include Christmas carols by the tree and hot chocolate with Santa at the fire station.

Friday, Dec. 18

• The Neches and Trinity Valleys Groundwater Conservation District Board of Directors will hold a workshop in the District Office, at 212 South Main Street in Jacksonville, beginning at 12:01 p.m. A business meeting will follow at 1:30 p.m. For more information call 903-541-4845.

Sunday, Dec. 20

• Junior Girl Scout Troop 3589 will wrap gifts for $1 each at Walgreens from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Fudge and other baked goodies will also be for sale. All proceeds to benefit the Girl Scouts. For more information call 903-675-4533.

Monday, Dec. 21

• Henderson County Senior Citizens will sponsor a Christmas dance at the Senior Citizens Building, on State Highway 31 east, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All ages are welcome. Music will be provided by the Highway 31 Band.

Saturday, Jan. 16

• Texas Gospel Music Hall, on 6513 State Highway 19 south, will host Palmetto State Quartet and Shiloh in concert beginning at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. For more information call 903-677-2492, 903-477-8084 or 903-675-5217.

• Trinity Clinic Canton education room, 18780 Interstate 20, will host monthly bereavement support groups the first Friday of each month from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The facilitator will be Nora Gravois, LMSW. For more information or to register call 903-266-3400, ext. 127 or 800-777-9860.

• The Athens Cancer Support Group and The Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Group meet together every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. in the ETMC Conference Room. All cancer patients, survivors and family members are encouraged to attend.

• The Workforce Solutions East Texas Job Club meets each Tuesday, at 205 North Murchison Street, Suite 101 in Athens, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. It helps job seekers with various aspects of conducting job searches, interviewing techniques, resume writing and current job trends.

• The Athens Lions Club meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Meetings are at the Tilo’s Cuisine in Heritage Square at 12 p.m. For more information call 903-477-0301.

• Caring Hearts Hospice, of Gun Barrel City, would like to invite you to a Grief Support Group for those that are struggling with the death of a loved one, friend, or family member. We will be meeting on the 3rd Thursday night of each month at 6:30, at the Caring Hearts Office located at 1837 W. Main in Gun Barrel City. There is no cost for these meetings. Our goal is to come along beside you and walk through this time with you. These meetings are open to the public and everyone is invited to attend. For more information contact 903-887-4788.

• The Henderson County Retired School Personnel Association meets at 2 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month in the Activity Building of the First United Methodist Church, Lovers Lane and College Street in Athens. For more information, call 903-451-2515.

• The College Street Market will be held every second Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, 2101 E. College St. Handmade crafts, collectibles and services are all offered. • Athens Genealogical Organization meets at 6 p.m., the last Thursday of the month, January through October, at the First Methodist Church on Lovers Lane in Athens.

  • Downed airplane located

    The Henderson County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Public Safety Game Wardens assisted in locating an plane that went down in Lake Palestine early Thursday. The Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.

  • City hears presentation for new apartment complex

    The Athens City Council heard a presentation, Wednesday, from a group that hopes to obtain a grant to build an apartment complex in south Athens.
    Jay Oji, of Sphinx Development Corporation, said the 80-unit complex called Robbins Villas would be built on a tract of land where Robbins Road intersects with Loop 7. The affordable housing units would cost about $12 million to construct.

  • Sory.JPG Athens Hornet now flying Hornets

    A former Athens High School student Bryan Sory is now flying FA-18C Hornets, the U.S. Navy’s frontline fighter plane.  Lt. Commander Sory flies for VFA-151, The Vigilantes, based in Lemoore, Calif.  VFA-151 deployed aboard the U.S.S. Lincoln in December, 2011, and is currently flying missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the overarching operation that encompasses, among other things, ongoing counter-terrorism and nation-building efforts in Afghanistan.

  • Commissioners re-appoint three current Fair Park Board members

    The Henderson County Commissioners Court, by a 3 to 2 vote, Tuesday, voted to re-appoint three current members of the Fair Park Board to new terms.
    Chairman Bob Miars and members Ken Hayes and Mark Davis were chosen to serve an additional two years, with their terms to run through Dec. 31, 2013.

  • Man named in plane theft

    Had it not been presence of a truck that authorities were able to trace to a Nacogdoches man, the search for a plane stolen from Athens Airport might be as difficult as finding a single bird in the sky.
    The 1980 model Cessna reported missing on Jan. 28 was recovered Monday by the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office, which had been assisting the Athens Police Department in the case.
