Athens’ KAB, citizens, to help city come clean
Annual Fall Cleanup and Texas Recycles Day Saturday, November 14 from 8 a.m. to noon at city collection site
Keep Athens Beautiful and citizens of Athens are going to do a little Fall cleaning Saturday.
The annual Fall Cleanup and Texas Recycles Day will be on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 8 a.m. to noon at the city collection site, on 500 Aaron St.
“Our annual clean-up is very important to the city,” KAB Executive Director Carol Morton said.
She said it gives citizens an opportunity to get rid of trash free-of-charge.
The clean-up is carried out in partnership with the City of Athens, Allied Waste and E and E Services, Morton said.
She said residents can drop off recyclables and waste, and all that’s required is a water bill and driver’s license to prove you are an Athens resident.
She said any electronics, cell phones and batteries can be recycled.
“We are in our third year of collecting e-waste for the community,” Morton said.
KAB is also recruiting clean teams to clean up problem areas.
“We are encouraging people to join a team,” Morton said. “They can meet at 8 a.m. at the collection site to pick up garbage sacks, and an area of town to clean up.”
She said the first 100 volunteers will receive a T-shirt.
Acceptable items:
• furniture, plastics, aluminum, tin/steel cans, newsprint, glass bottles, food jars and aluminum beverage cans.
Unacceptable items:
• tires, mirrors, window glass, car glass, light bulbs including fluorescent bulbs, medicine bottles, heat-treated glass such as Pyrex or laboratory glass, aluminum foil, food trays and aluminum siding.
“Everybody looks forward to it,” Morton said. “Our city is cleaner by doing this twice a year.”
