BISD to honor veterans on their day

For more than a decade, the Brownsboro Independent School District has honored the veterans who fought for our country.

This year is not exception.

“This is something we have done for over 15 years,” Brownsboro teacher John Mayes said. “This year, I hope it is bigger and better than ever.”

The event is scheduled for Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 9 a.m. in the Brownsboro High School gym.

Mayes wanted everyone to know they would like to have as many former and current military personnel as possible.

“In the past we have had close to 100 come out for this program,” Mayes said. “It’s really been remarkable. We put out at least 100 chairs. I think this year it will be the same.”

Some of the new features this year will be a slide show that plays throughout the program with pictures of all the veterans in attendance.

All the veterans and military that plan on attending the program are asked to come at 8 a.m. for coffee and donuts. This is when the pictures will be taken.

“I wish we had done this every year,” Mayes said. “There are a lot of men that have been here in the past that have passed on. It would have been great if we could have honored them with their photograph.

“We want to put all of their pictures up, and honor them in that way. From now on, we will have those pictures to use year-after-year.”

Also scheduled for the program are some students who will sing some hymns and patriotic songs. The band is scheduled to play several numbers, and this year’s guest speaker is Jimmy Gibson, former World War II Army Sargent.

Gibson is also a 1971 graduate of Brownsboro High School. He is scheduled to talk about what the war was like, and how he and others like him served their country.

“It’s going to be an honor to have Mr. Gibson here for all of us to here from, “ Mayes said.
