A nationwide shortage of the influenza vaccine is behind the cancellation of several Texas Department of State Health Services’ flu shot clinics.
“We don’t have very much at all,” Regional Director for the DSHS Dr. Paul McGaha said.
He said the Athens’ clinic has a small supply of adult flu vaccines and a larger supply for children.
The flu shot clinics scheduled to be held at the Edom Community Center and Van Community Center have been canceled.
DSHS Nurse Angela Rodriguez said the vaccines are available in both the shot and nasal mist. McGaha said national distributors are estimating new shipments of the vaccine will be available in a few weeks.
DSHS will hold three clinics:
• Nov. 10 at the LaPoynor Independent School District from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.;
• Nov. 5 at the Brownsboro High School from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and
• Nov. 13 at the Trinidad Independent School District from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
