Athens —
Kaufman County officials and other law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the murder of Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse.
Hasse, who had been with Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland’s office for three years, was gunned down in the parking lot as he arrived at work on Jan. 31. Funeral services for Hasse are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Terrell Performing Arts Center.
McLelland said in a press release issued Tuesday that authorities are actively reviewing and investigating all credible leads.
“A review of Hasse’s current and former cases is underway and investigators are communicating with his personal and professional associates,” McLelland said. “A forensics team is actively processing all evidence collected from the crime scene.”
According to McLelland, investigators continue to look for an older model, Ford Taurus-style sedan, silver or possibly brown in color. Law officers are seeking one or two persons who were possibly dressed in black at the time of the shooting.
McLelland said Canton Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh and Sheriff David Byrnes would like to thank all the surrounding agencies that have offered support and assistance as needed.
“Communities from around the county have rallied around the Hasse family as well as law enforcement agencies working on this investigation,” McLelland said. “Your generous donations of food, service and support have been greatly appreciated.”
McLelland said investigators from nine agencies are working around the clock on Hasse’s case: Kaufman Police Department, Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, Kaufman County Constables, Kaufman District Attorney’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Marshals.
McLelland said citizens should understand and be aware that security is being stepped up throughout the community. They are being asked to beware of their surroundings, always err on the side of caution and never hesitate to call 9-1-1 for assistance.

The courthouse and other county locations have traditionally closed on a Friday in May for Fiddlers Day. County employees were given May 24 as a holiday this year in anticipation of the event. Wet and wild
A line of severe thunderstorms roared throughout Henderson County on Tuesday afternoon, dropping significant rainfall and taking down trees and power lines.
The storm produced heavy rains in Athens, where the National Weather Service reports 2.16 inches fell. Residents in the county were seeing three or more inches in their rain gauges. -
Strong message
A Henderson County jury delivered a strong message to a 37-year-old Kemp man in the sentencing phase of a child sexual-abuse trial on Tuesday.
The jury, in Judge Mark Calhoon’s 3rd District Court, handed Danny Ray Lusk four life sentences and one 20-year sentence, the maximum jail time on each count. -
Going to ‘WAR’
A program termed “We Are Responsible” was generated this year at South Athens Elementary School by its principal, Eugene Buford.
At first reading, the slogan appears to be for the school’s students. But, after looking at the slogan and noting that the abbreviation is WAR, Buford says the slogan is for educators. -
