SHADY OAKS — A barbecue fund-raiser to help the Southside Volunteer Fire Department in Shady Oaks is set for Saturday afternoon at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7103 in Athens.

Southside organizer Edith Brown said the department lacks funds for  equipment. All proceeds from the fund-raiser will go toward meeting those needs. The menu of brisket, ham, sausage and all of the trimmings will be served from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. for a price of $8 per person.

The Southside VFD was formed after the Shady Oaks VFD became insolvent in November 2010. Members of the community met and decided to create the Southside VFD to serve the area once protected by the former department. The station is located at the intersection of FM 59 and FM 753 near Shady Oaks Baptist Church.

“I think the new department is going pretty well,” Brown said.

Brown said she and her husband, W.A. Brown, live near the station. The Browns say there are many residents in the Shady Oaks area and the community needs local fire protection.

During the time between the closing of the Shady Oaks VFD and the launching of Southside, firefighters from other departments were dispatched to blazes in the area. The fact that the responders were from Baxter and Malakoff led to increased response times.

The VFW post is located behind Lake Athens Baptist Church on FM 2495.
