PLANO — A group of students from LaPoynor High School recently were among more than 200 students to compete in the Future Business Leaders of America Area VI Conference and Competition at Plano East Senior High School.
LHS came away with a number of outstanding finishes at the competition. First-place finishes for LaPoynor came from Jenny Waren (FBLA Principles and Procedures), Kelsey Bristow (Introduction to Parliamentary Procedures), Justin Nichols (Introduction to Technology Concepts).
Melody Avalos, Jensen Anderson, Will Little and Logan McClelland placed second in Desktop Publishing, which is a team event. Shanique Hurd placed second in FBLA Principles and Procedures; D’Mia Negrete placed fifth in FBLA Principles and Procedures; Savanna Abendroth was second in Introduction to Business; Seth Anderson came in third in Introduction to Business.
Also, Kivi Eldridge placed fourth in Introduction to Business; Brianna Bishop placed fourth in Introduction to Business Communication; Katie Owens finished second in Introduction to Business Communication; Tabatha Crook was third in Introduction to Parliamentary Procedures; Haley Terry finished second in Introduction to Parliamentary Procedures; Cassie Tobin placed second in Public Speaking II, and Kenzie George placed fourth in Technology Concepts.
“I’m very proud of these students and their dedication to FBLA,” said LaPoynor FBLA advisor Donna Crook, who has been a part of the organization for about six years along with Patty Bristow. “It is very rewarding working with such dedicated students, especially since this is an extracurricular activity.”
Officer elections for 2013-2014 were also held at the meet. Tabatha Crook will be the Area VI Secretary and Kelsey Bristow will be the Area VI Parliamentarian. Bristow had the highest score on the Parliamentary Procedures test, which is how the Parliamentarian is selected. Also, Melody Avalos will be the State FBLA Vice President for Area VI but will not be officially sworn in until March at the State Leadership Conference in Dallas.
Crook said students give up their free time to compete, perform community service projects, attend chapter meetings during their lunch periods and attend state conferences. She said LaPoynor’s FBLA chapter would like to offer thanks to the businesses in the area that have supported the group as it travels to various conferences around the state.
In March, LaPoynor FBLA will travel to Dallas for its State Leadership Conference and will once again be looking for support from local businesses.
“The kids are our future, and here at LaPoynor, we are trying to give them many different opportunities such as FBLA to help them be more successful,” Crook said.

A future investment
Harry and Patti Hogue present a check for $500 to go toward the Splash Pad at Kiwanis Park in Athens. The fund-raising effort is nearing the finish line for the $220,000 project, although donations are still being sought. The Splash Pad is expected to be open some time this summer.

Fly-in to help with awareness of airport
Mark your calendar for June 1. Athens will be busy with the Old Fiddlers Reunion and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes events.
To make the day complete, the Athens Municipal Airport will be hosting a “Fly-in” on Saturday, June 1. According to organizer Charles Tidmore, the event will give the local community a better awareness and appreciation of the Athens Airport. -
AISD hires PBK architects
Athens Independent School District Blake Stiles believes one of the biggest considerations rendered at Thursday’s school board meeting was to choose a company that will carry out construction for security at Athens High School and Athens Middle School. The contractor is known as a construction manager at risk.
