County jobless numbers take dip

ATHENS — The Henderson County unemployment rate dropped to its lowest point in 2012 in November, hitting 6.4 percent — its best mark since December 2008.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the county unemployment figure fell from 6.8 percent in October. The number of unemployed workers also fell for Henderson County, from 2,472 to 2,294,

The TWC reports the Texas unemployment rate fell to 6.2 percent in November, down from 6.6 percent in October and 7.3 percent at the start of 2012. Texas’ rate was also its lowest since December 2008.

“Texas is showing sustained economic strength, and our unemployment rate is now the lowest that it has been since December 2008,” TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton said.

Henderson County began the year with an 8.4 percent unemployment rate

“Private sector employers continue to lead the way to growth and prosperity in Texas,” TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Tom Pauken said. “We’ve seen 266,400 private sector jobs added in Texas over the past year, and we’re maintaining a 3.0 percent annual growth rate.”

Henderson County saw growth in the number on the job during 2012. The county had 33,304 employed in January, which had grown to 33,810 in November.

Job seekers in Henderson County can get assistance at the East Texas Workforce Center, at 205 N. Murchison St. in Athens. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call ETWC at 903-677-3521.

    Nathan Bullard, owner of Yellow Box Environmental LLC,  was at Gun Barrel City Hall to explain future development plans for property located at 546 Gun Barrel Lane.
    Bullard said he wanted to introduce himself and his company to the neighbors who own property close to his project.  
    Bullard was on hand to inform the public and address any concerns about the company’s plan to build a recovery and transfer station.

    Representatives of the Sons of the Republic of Texas were on hand at the Henderson County Commissioners Court meeting Tuesday in observance of a proclamation, declaring April 21, San Jacinto Day.

  • Athens tables large purchase

    The Athens City Council  Monday tabled awarding a bid for a large piece of equipment that removes asphalt from the surface of paved roads to make way for repairs.
    City Director of Utilities Glen Herriage recommended that the council award the bid to RDO Equipment Co. of Irving for a Road Hog cold planer. The RDO bid was for $123,267.06, which is below the budgeted amount of $134,000.
