Margaret Sinclair of Mabank might just be “The Next Big Thing.”
Sinclair has qualified as a finalist of “The Next Big Thing” product contest. The national product search contest is held at Dallas Market Center. There are only three products left to win the prize package valued at $12,500.
Sinclair, a former nurse, has designed and patented Maggies. Sinclair said Maggies are powerful little American-made fashion magnets designed to hold several layers of your favorite fabrics together. Hiding behind the scenes and under the seams, Maggies allow you to wear your scarves, shawls or sarongs in ways only fashionistas dream about.
“They are very easy to use,” said Sinclair.
Sinclair retired to the Cedar Creek Lake area in 2005 after selling her manufacturing business in Dallas.
Sinclair, a registered nurse, began her career inventing products for patient positioning, including a premature baby positioning pad. Sinclair said in 1984 that she returned to Dallas from London and started a manufacturing business to develop and distribute a line of products. She was awarded seven patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for her inventions.
Her new adventure and her eighth patent is an Magnetic Textile Fastener, now called Maggies. It was invented in October, 2012, but was not taken to the market until January, 2013.
Maggies are sold at speciality boutiques such as Kathy’s Boutique in Athens. Maggies can be purchased at Kathy's for $35.
“The Next Big Thing” finalist will exhibit their product before attendees from all 50 states and more than 78 countries during the upcoming Dallas Temp Show to held June 20-23, during the Total Home and Gift Market.
The three finalists are: Lawn Lights, invented by Mark Halther, Washington, Ind.; Tady Tote, invented by Sharon Soloway from Tuscon, Ariz.; and Margaret Sinclair, inventor of Maggies from Mabank.
According to the organizers of the contest, “The Next Big Thing” received dozens of applications from product designers, entrepreneurs and other creative minds from across the country and internationally. The contest allows up-and-comers, whether companies or individuals, to show their product in front of domestic and international retail buyers at Dallas Market Center.
Judges from consumer and trade media, as well as industry experts and former winners, will help select the winner based on the finalists’ products. The public was allowed to vote on their favorite through June 12.
“The 'Next Big Thing” winner will be announced on Saturday, June 22 and receive a prize package worth more than $12,500, including a $2,500 cash prize.
