List of holiday closings offered

ATHENS — Labor Day is a nationally-mandated federal holiday which is observed by many government entities and local businesses in Athens and the Henderson County area.

Athens City Hall will be closed for business on Monday. However, Allied Waste which handles trash pickup for city will be running its routes as usual.

Many institutions, such as banks and post offices will be closed.

A banking exception that will stay open is the grocery store branches of Southside Bank. 

Closures include area public schools, including all campuses in the Athens Independent School District System as well as Trinity Valley Community College..

Government buildings like the Henderson County Courthouse, as well as the  Judicial Center will also be closed. The Murchison Library in Athens will also suspend operations on the holiday.

The business office of the Athens Review will also be closed.

Business as usual will resume Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Labor Day gained its status as a federal holiday in 1894. All 50 U.S. states observe Labor Day as a state holiday.
