Athens —
Thieves hit the South Athens Elementary School area Monday, breaking into automobiles, and leaving with valuables.
The Athens Police Department took calls reporting three break-ins that occurred between 5:50 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Two reports came from South Athens Elementary School at 718 Robbins Road.
Officer Wesley Hoover was dispatched to the location to speak to the complainants. Windows were broken on the vehicles to gain entry to the vehicles.
Another vehicle was burglarized in the nearby First Christian Church parking lot at 900 Robbins Road. Cpl. Roger Keith took a report from the owner of a Ford Escape who had been a burglary victim. The break-ins are being investigated.
Burglars were also active in other parts of the city. APD responded to an alarm at the old Fisher School building in the 400 block of Martin Luther King. At about 8:45 p.m., Officer John Beaty met with the pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church, the current owner of the property, and found that window glass had been broken in order to enter the building. No further information was available on the break-in at press time.

Athens house burned
A Monday afternoon fire inflicted severe damage to a house at 911 W. Cayuga Dr. in Athens.
No one was injured in the blaze that started in the back bedroom of the residence. Athens Fire Chief John McQueary said the resident had been staying with her sister and was not at home at the time of the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation. -

Time to have a blast
The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is coming up on Thursday, July 4. The show will last about one-half hour and is one of the biggest in East Texas.
The fireworks show is directed and produced by Alpha-Lee Enterprises, Inc. of Liverpool, Texas. The show is a Keep Athens Beautiful event. -

Beetle infestation in county
If you’ve noticed some big black bugs gathering outside your home or crawling along the carpet, you’re just seeing evidence of the large number of ground beetles now in East Texas.
