Robbery suspect arrested

Athens — The Athens Police Department located and arrested a 37-year-old man Friday, suspected of an armed robbery at Friendly’s Exxon on East Tyler Street last week.

The Criminal Investigations Division had been working leads since the robbery was reported Nov. 9 at the gas station/convenience store at 1421 E. Tyler St.

Samuel Rivera of Athens was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. in the 600 block of South Prairieville Street in connection with the hold-up.

APD Assistant Chief of Police Rodney Williams, III said that Rivera was first arrested for public intoxication after police responded to a call reporting a suspicious person. During the suspicious person investigation, police found evidence that linked Rivera to the robbery.

Williams said APD Detectives James Bonnette and Chris Saylors were called to the scene, where they confirmed that the evidence found was connected to the robbery. The evidence was presented to Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Randy Daniel, who issued an arrest warrant on the robbery charge.

Rivera was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Henderson County Justice Center for book-in.

Williams said the investigation into the robbery is ongoing, and information will be presented to the Henderson County District Attorney’s Office.

On Nov. 9, the on-duty clerk at the Exxon station was approached by a man who displayed a small-caliber revolver, and stole an undisclosed amount of money. No shots were fired, and the clerk was not injured.
