Honoring Drumgoole

TVCC golf classic to celebrate his life

Athens — Trinity Valley Community College is making a change to its homecoming festivities this year in order to honor the late Dr. W.P. “Rip” Drumgoole.

Drumgoole, who spent almost four decades serving at the college, died last year after a battle with cancer.

“One thing everyone knew about Rip was that he loved homecoming,” said TVCC’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement Mary Nicholson. “So we thought what better way to honor him than with an event that weekend.”

So when TVCC kicks off homecoming weekend on Oct. 12, the festivities will begin with the Rip Drumgoole Homecoming Golf Classic. The four-person scramble event will start at 8:30 a.m. at Athens Country Club.

The cost to play, said Nicholson, is $35 per person and includes lunch.

“We are not using this event to raise funds,” she noted. “Although we always welcome donations, we instead wanted to find a way that all Rip’s friends and our alumni could gather together and do something they loved while reminiscing about his life and HCJC/TVCC.

“We are hoping to make this an annual event, a regular part of the festivities we have each year at homecoming. We wanted to add a Friday morning event for our alumni who either live in the area or who come in early.”

Following the golf event, lunch will be served at the country club. Nicholson said those who are not playing in the event are still welcome to attend the luncheon. Cost for lunch will be nominal and will need to be paid directly to the country club.

Drumgoole began his career at Henderson County Junior College (the former name of TVCC) in 1973 as a counselor. He served in a couple of other counseling-related positions before becoming vice president of student services, a position he held until his death.

Drumgoole was also active in a variety of civic organizations, including the Athens Rotary Club. The club will officially announce a scholarship in Drumgoole’s name at the luncheon.

Members of Drumgoole’s family will be playing in the tournament, said Nicholson.
