ATHENS — The  Henderson County grand jury returned an indictment April 25 on a Longview man arrested in February for allegedly starting a fire at the Cardinal Apartments on South Prairieville Street in Athens.

District Attorney Scott McKee said 20-year-old Samuel Logan Mason was arrested Feb. 4 in connection with the fire. Mason remains in the Henderson County Jail with bond set at $20,000.

Arson is a second-degree felony which carries a sentence, upon conviction, of two to 20 years in prison and a possible fine not to exceed $10,000.

At about 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, the Athens Fire Department responded to a call related to a fire in unit six, located on the east end of the apartment complex. AFD gained control of the fire and secured the scene for the night.

The following day, Athens Fire Marshall Ronnie Denton went to the complex to investigate the fire.  Denton spoke with witnesses, including the resident of the apartment.

During the investigation, Denton learned that the fire started on a mattress in the bedroom of the apartment.

Denton compiled evidence in the case and obtained a warrant for Mason’s arrest. He was arrested two days later without incident and transported to the justice center.

AFD was assisted in the case by the Henderson County Fire Marshal’s Office.
