Athens — Mount Moriah Baptist Church is a victim of criminal mischief, according to Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt.

The crime occurred at about  9:48 a.m. on July 7.

“There was a word written on one of the windows,” Nutt said. “And, it’s not one you want to print in the newspaper.”

Crimestoppers has been alerted about the activity at the church located at 6382 CR 3918 in Athens.

Officials at the church could not be contacted late Friday, but Crimestoppers coordinator Bryan Barnhart said no amount has been set up as a reward.

He explained the process.

“A tipster makes a call to the Crimestoppers tip line.  Once that happens, the information is forwarded to the proper law enforcement agency,” Barnhart said. “The law enforcement agency takes the tip and makes a disposition on the tip. If the tip proves to be accurate and results in an arrest, that is taken to the board for approval and a payout.”

Barnhart said the range of the payout is up to $1,000.  He added that the next board meeting will be July 25.
