Athens — An 18-year-old Trinity Valley Community College football player was injured when struck by a vehicle as he walked near the campus on Wednesday morning.

Athens Police Department Assistant Chief Rodney Williams, III said Ugonna Nwarie’s injuries were not life-threatening, but he suffered a broken leg.

APD reports said the wreck occurred shortly before 8 a.m., when a 1983 Ford Ranger pickup was traveling east in the 400 block of Lakeside Drive while Nwarie was headed south on Dean Street.

The 66-year-old driver of the pickup failed to yield right-of-way and struck the student, who was in the cross walk. The left-front section of the pickup struck the pedestrian, knocking him to the pavement. Nwarie was transported by EMS to East Texas Medical Center with incapacitating injuries.
