Athens — The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, following up on the 2-year old case of a missing man, has recovered what is believed to be human remains on the property near Eustace.

On Thursday,  Sgt. Thomas Goodell took advantage of an opportunity to search for the missing man on the property in the 500 block of U.S. Highway 175, east of the city. Sheriff Ray Nutt said new owners of the property were at the location clearing out some of the debris.

“We knew there might be a body on that property,” Sheriff Ray Nutt said. “Thomas Goodell went up there yesterday, and talked to them, and told them what we suspected. They had done a bunch of backhoe work, and were tearing out some old buildings.”

Nutt said it’s now up to DNA evidence to confirm their

“We are reasonably sure we found a body, and we assume it’s the man who’s been missing,” Nutt said.

Nutt said the department conducted a search of the property last year, but did not find the remains. With the discovery on Thursday, the investigation gains new momentum.

“We’ve been digging in the rain to be sure we get all of the remains,” Nutt said.

The excavation had to be suspended for a few hours overnight when a thunderstorm rolled through the area, Nutt said.
