Truck traffic limited by Seven Points ordinance

Athens — It was Thursday night that Seven Points City Council voted to adopt an ordinance promoting no truck traffic.

The ordinance will prohibit truck drivers from taking their big rigs home for an extended period of time. According to acting Mayor Pro-tem Kevin Pollock, there are places on State Highway 334 that  truck drivers can park their trucks.

It is believed that the trucks traveling in at least one subdivision are  tearing up the road.

The drivers can still take their trucks home to do maintenance. Pollock said the city will be posting signs of the new ordinance.

The City Council took the advise of Karen Flagg with the Planning and Zoning Committee not to allow Jimmy D. Fitch a variance to place a doublewide mobile home to use as his residence on his property behind his business.

Flagg said she could find no allowance for a residential home on property-zoned business.

The three council people at the meeting voted unanimously to discontinue  the Citizens Patrol program.

According to Councilwoman Cheryl Jones, the program only has one person, and is cost-prohibited at this time.

Jones voted negatively  when it came to paying the bills, and approving unaudited financials for January. Councilmen Kenny Boyle and Pollock approved the payment.

The motion carried with only two votes, because only three members were required to have  a quorum.

An item on the agenda for city support for Whatz-Up Family Fun Park to acquire Main Place Cinema was tabled.

The council went into executive session to discuss the employment of Postal Clerk Pat Howell. When they returned to council chambers, they voted for Howell to  remain a part-time as-needed clerk at the post office. The council voted to re-evaluate Howell at the end of her probation period.

Acting Mayor Pro-tem Keven Pollock  of Seven Points  announced to the citizens at the council meeting  that he has filed the paperwork to run for Mayor of Seven Points.

The council appointed Pollock Mayor Pro-tem while current Mayor Pro-tem Claudette Allsup is on an extended vacation.

“I have one year on the council, and can provide the leadership to point the city in the right direction,” Pollock said. “My experience as a retired military officer gives me the know-how to lead.”

The Seven Points council has a mayor and two council seat up for election.

Councilwoman Cheryl Jones' seat is up in May.  According to Jones, she intends to file the paperwork for re-election.

The paperwork to run for an open seat on the council is due to the City Secretary by March 5.
