Athens — The Athens Police Department is investigating more than 300 cases of beer stolen during a break-in last week from a local business.

The burglary was discovered Saturday morning at J&W Beer and Wine at 524 W. Corsicana St., located adjacent to J&W Auto Sales. APD was still gathering information on the break-in, Wednesday.

“We have a lead, and we’re following up,” APD Detective Sgt.  Don Yarbrough said.

According to APD reports, the J&W burglary was discovered about 9 a.m. on Saturday, as employees arrived at work, Saturday.

Officer William Carlow was dispatched to the location, and spoke to the complainant who said unknown individuals had entered the property, and taken the cases of assorted beer. The cases were removed from a large horse trailer that was being used as a storage building.

The burglary has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Division. Yarbrough said the value of the stolen beer was about $5,000.
