Athens — Two women were killed in a three-vehicle wreck on US 175 at the intersection of Ranch-to-Market Road 2588 in Larue on Friday.

The women were identified as  ages 31-year-old Carrie Smith and 19-year-old Taylor Nix. Both were from the Murchison area.

Trooper Monica Carranza said the wreck occurred at about 7:45 a.m. when a box truck was headed west on U.S. 175. The women were in a 1999 Nissan Maxima that approached northbound on Ranch-to-Market road 2588. The Nissan pulled into the path of the box truck and was struck, spinning it into the opposite lane, where it was struck by a 2003 Toyota SUV.

The driver of the truck was taken to East Texas Medical Center in Athens with non-life -threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV and three passengers in the vehicle were not injured.

The wreckage caused the highway to be closed while responders worked the accident scene. Carranza said the scene was cleared at about 2 p.m. Along with the DPS, the Larue-New York Volunteer fire department and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office were both at the location helping divert traffic. Fortunately for motorists, the vehicles were able to detour around the wreckage by using Loop 60.
