Man dies after car hits concrete mixer

Mabank resident was enroute to Wills Point to pick up newspapers for delivery

Athens — An early morning wreck on Thursday killed a 59-year-old Mabank man whose pickup slammed into the back of a cement mixer on State Highway 198.

According to reports, Ronny Andrews was northbound on State Highway 198 shortly before 8 a.m. when the wreck occurred. Andrews was headed out of town when his 2001 Chevrolet collided with the truck.  The driver of the cement mixer was not hurt in the wreck.

The collision occurred near the Golden Buckle Beer and Tobacco store in the 15,000 block of State Highway  198. The pickup’s front end struck the back of the mixer causing major damage to the pickup.

Mabank Police Department Officer Michael Main worked the wreck, which is still under investigation. Main said police do not know why the driver didn’t adjust before hitting the mixer, but his vision may have been impaired by the sun.

Kaufman County Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Johnny Adams pronounced Andrews dead at 8:06 a.m., and ordered the body transported to Dallas for an autopsy.

“It was a horrific wreck,” Adams said of the collision.

According to the Cedar Creek Monitor and Lake Area Leader website, Andrews worked distribution for the company and was driving to Wills Point to pick up a load of newspapers,.

The Monitor reports the wife of the deceased, Peggy, works in food service for the Eustace Independent School District. The couple has two grown children and several grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are being handled through the Anderson Clayton Funeral Home in Kemp.
