Commissioners thank Hall for service

Athens — The Henderson County Commissioners Court made Precinct 1 Commissioner Joe Hall’s last meeting a memorable one Tuesday.

With Christmas and New Years Day, each falling on a Tuesday, the meeting was the final one until Jan. 8 2013. Hall’s term ends Dec. 31.

“I just want to thank him, first of all for his service,” County Judge Richard Sanders said, “Not only for the county, but for the community, and his church and all of the other lives he has touched.”

Sanders and Precinct 4 Commissioner Ken Geeslin have served with Hall for the past two years. Precinct 2 Commissioner Wade McKinney and Precinct 3 Commissioner Ronny Lawrence was on the court for Hall’s full 12-year run.

“It has been the greatest experience of my lifetime,” Hall said of his years on the court. “There have been hard times, but God has blessed us, and strengthened us to get through them.”

Hall thanked Sanders and the commissioners for the time they shared on the court.

“We worked together really well,” Hall said.

After the meeting, a reception was held in Hall’s honor. Phillip Smith, of Congressman Jeb Hensarling’s office, presented Hall with an American flag that flew over the U.S. capital building in Washington D.C., as well as a Texas flag. McKinney presented Hall a plaque on behalf of the court, commemorating the years he spent, not only as commissioner, but previously as a county employee.

Other action on Tuesday’s light agenda included a refund for property taxes that had been overpaid to the county. According to Henderson County Tax Assessor/Collector Milburn Chaney’s office, the 20 refund checks totaled $40,530.49.

Commissioners also authorized payment of bills in the amount of $276,295.43.
