Gubernatorial candidate to visit Athens

Medina will be at the local Republican Party Headquarters Saturday evening

A candidate for the Texas governor’s race is scheduled to visit Athens Saturday.

Debra Medina — the chair of the Wharton County Republican Party — will visit the local Republican Party Headquarters on the Henderson County Courthouse Square at 6 p.m. She is a candidate for governor in 2010.

“I was born in Beeville and raised on a South Texas farm,” Medina said. “I am a wife and mother, a registered nurse, a businesswoman, a rancher and a fighter.”

She said she plans to look at what should be done to liquidate “toxic” assets from state investment funds. “I’ll be discussing my plans to shore up our economy, to eliminate property taxes and eliminate — or reduce — the business margins tax,” Medina said in an e-mail to the Athens Review. “We’ll discuss rejecting federal mandates and heading off the state pension fund liability crisis.”

She said she will champion protection of private property, family and faith.

She said she is looking forward to sharing this vision with Athens and to responding to the concerns of fellow Texans.

According to her web site— www.medinafortexas.com — she first got involved in politics in the early 1990s, when she saw that local leaders were not honoring the pro-life principles that guide her beliefs.

She took the Republican Party of Texas to court in 2008 over violations in how the state convention was run.

Her web site also states she graduated from San Antonio’s Baptist Memorial Hospital System School of Nursing in 1984 and homeschooled both her children.

According to her web site, she later earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Le Tourneau University. In 2002, she founded her own business, Prudentia Inc., which specializes in improving medical billing procedures.

“I’m determined to meet with as many Texans as I can and to remember while a lot of us live in the major cities, Texas is a big state and everyone matters,” she said. “So look for me in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio, but also look for me in great communities like Athens.”

    Mia Orosco wasn’t born with a fiddle in her hand playing a breakdown, but to the crowd at the Athens Old Fiddler’s Reunion it seemed as easy for her as drawing a breath.
    Orosco turned 19 on Wednesday, taking her out of the youth division to compete against the best. She’s only been using her violin in the fiddlin’ style for about five years.

    The polls open Tuesday at 7 a.m. in the Democratic and Republican Primaries. Henderson County candidates run the gamut from first-timers to long-time incumbents.
    Some county voters will be traveling to new polling places for this round of balloting, after the much-debated redistricting process.

    The fiddlers are firing up, and they'll be going until the clock strikes 12 with the street dance, as the 81st Annual Old Fiddlers Reunion gets into high gear.

    The Athens High School Valedictorian of 2012 is Rachaelle Browning. She is the daughter of Wes and Jan Browning. Rachaelle will be attending the University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 2012 and plans to major in Aerospace Engineering.
    Rachaelle has participated in various extracurricular activities throughout high school in preparation for a career in engineering.
