The filing deadline for the May 9 city and school board elections passed Monday with few contested races in Henderson County.
The City of Athens will not require an election because only the incumbents, Mayor Randy Daniel and Councilman Jerry Don Vaught filed for the two available seats.
Since the law allowing entities without a contested race to cancel elections went into effect in 1996, Athens has had few contested municipal races. Elections were canceled in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008.
The Athens Independent School District Board of Trustees will have one contested seat. In Place 3, Ginger Kirk has drawn a challenge from Will Davies. Rob Risko will be unopposed for another term in Place 4.
The Malakoff mayoral race will have three trying for the spot. The candidates are John Shumate, Dennis Haws and Ricky Layne Baker. Mayor Pat Isaacson resigned last November stating it was time for her to move on.
Mayor Pro-Tem Tim Trimble, who assumed the duties of the mayor while the seat was vacant, is seeking another term on the council, as is Jeanette King. Trimble and King were the top two vote-getters two years ago and are the lone candidates for the two seats in 2009.
The race for city council in Trinidad has drawn a crowded field. Five candidates are seeking seats: Gary Brett, Mary E. Johnston, Susan Latham, John Lewis and Linda Brock. The mayor’s race there is also contested with incumbent Mike Black facing Tamra Brickey.
