Disturbance leads to arrest

Man booked by Athens Police being held on parole violation in connection to robbery charge

A disturbance at the Village Apartments Saturday morning started a chain of events that led to the arrest of an Athens man on a warrant from the Bureau of Pardons and Paroles.

Samuel DeWayne Colbert, 22, was being held in the Henderson County Jail without bond Monday on a parole violation charge. He was also served Athens Municipal Court warrants for three Class C misdemeanor traffic offenses and one warrant from Kaufman Municipal Court.

According to Athens Police Department reports, dispatch received a call around 7:14 a.m. Saturday stating that a man was kicking at the door of one of the apartments.

Officer Billy Troy Harrod went to the apartment, where Keith Washington, a friend of Colbert’s ex-girlfriend, said he had broken in his front door but had not entered the residence.

Officers Harrod and Chad Walker and Sgt. Eddie Smith began combing the area for Colbert. At 8:11 a.m., officers saw a gray vehicle that fit the description of Colbert’s on East Tyler Street and signaled for him to pull over. Colbert complied, but when officers approached, he exited the vehicle and tried to run. Colbert only made it a few steps before he was apprehended.

“Because he only got a few steps, the officer didn’t charge him with attempting to flee,” Lt. Bill Gurley said.

Colbert had been on parole since December 2007 after being jailed on 2003 robbery charge, according to Department of Public Safety records.

    Had it not been presence of a truck that authorities were able to trace to a Nacogdoches man, the search for a plane stolen from Athens Airport might be as difficult as finding a single bird in the sky.
    The 1980 model Cessna reported missing on Jan. 28 was recovered Monday by the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office, which had been assisting the Athens Police Department in the case.

    GUN BARREL CITY  — Donna Jean Schultz, 43, of GBC was stopped by a Henderson County Sheriff’s Department deputy last Friday at about 6 p.m. for a minor traffic violation near CJ’s parking lot off State Highway 334 and U.S. Highway 175.
    The minor traffic violation proved to be the least of her problems.
