AHS faculty sale crafts for the needy

By Angela Weatherford

Members of Athens High School’s faculty are using their talents to raise money.

“We have resurrected this program,” said AHS Spanish teacher Jane Bailey. “The faculty use to sale their crafts every year around this time, and it would always go to purchasing Christmas gifts for a family in need.”

Bailey, who returned last year to AHS, thought it would be a good idea to bring the “Faculty Crafters” back.

“Our administration this year is great,” she said, “and they said we could try it again.”

Each faculty member who wanted to sale their crafts had to give Bailey an item that would be placed in a basket to be raffled off.

“Raffle tickets will be sold for the next two weeks,” said Bailey. “The tickets cost a dollar, and can either be purchased at the high school or from AHS teacher MaryAnn Tyner.”

Bailey said that the craft fair began in the early nineties, and the name came from one of the past principals.

“One year I went to Tyler and bought enough gifts to fill up the suburban,” said Bailey.

The winner of the raffle will be chosen the last week of school before the Christmas break, when the faculty comes together for either a meal or a meeting.

“The community is invited to come up to the teachers lounge and check out the crafts that we have,” said Bailey.

Lining the walls of the teachers lounge are handmade items like Santas, candles, soaps, baskets, wooden crafts, baby gifts, scarves, beaded items and baked good.
