Reviewing Stand

By Robby Robertson

Everybody is in the weight-loss mode. That’s a good thing. Statistics show there are more people who are overweight today than ever before.

Most people know the reason. Not enough exercise and too much junk food. More people are eating out than ever before. We are all busier and seem to not have enough time to cook, so we go out to eat. The problem with that is, we don’t watch what we eat.

I’ll have to admit, I am the world’s worst person at that. But I am getting better. I am now watching what I eat more closely. I don’t eat out as much and when I do, I am careful what to order.

I am one of those overweight people. I know the reason and I know how to fix it. I need to exercise every day and cut down (if not cut out) my sugar and fat intake.

The problem I see with a lot of people this day and age is they think there is a quicker or easier solution. I have heard everything from “I found this pill, or this powder. I have a person I am seeing for it.” Or some people say they can just get on an eating plan that will get them back in those jeans they couldn’t wear before.

I want to repeat myself – diet (slow down on the sugar and fat) and exercise. The last part is the kicker. These two things go hand in hand.

I am one of those people who will go work out more consistently and watch what I eat closer if I have someone to be accountable to, but it all comes down to doing the action and not giving up.

Your body needs motion to get the heart rate up. To live longer and avoid heart disease you must exercise. Not only does it get the heart rate up, it cleans out your system.

When I get my heart rate up, it usually hurts at the time, but I feel much better later. I feel more refreshed and have much more energy.

The problem for most of us is doing the action – actually getting up and doing the exercise. I know all about that. I am the king of procrastination when it comes to exercise. I get in the mood for a while and I’ll go two, three, maybe even a month and religiously walk, run, ride a bicycle or lift weights.

Then I’ll have a bad day, or just get lazy. Yes, I did say lazy, and not do anything for several months. This is what I am trying to avoid. (I’m thinking by writing this, it will make me do much better) But we have to learn to be consistent with our exercise.

I know that when I was in great shape in 1996, I was working out three times a week and being consistent with my eating. But I was able to eat a few fattening things from time to time and it not hurt me. All because I worked out on a regular basis.

Make time for exercise. Go walking three times a week, or play some sport you like. Swimming at the Cain Center is always fun. Just do something that will get your heart rate up and eat better foods like chicken and fish. Be healthy and live longer. I know I am going to do my best.
