The Athens Daily Review won 10 awards in the 2006 North & East Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
The North & East Texas Press Association (NETPA) is a subsidiary of the Texas Press Association, which was established in Houston in 1880. The NETPA Better Newspaper Contest is held annually with 112 competing regional newspapers.
The Better Newspaper Contest includes 12 major categories in writing, photography, page layout and advertising. Newspapers are judged in each category based on select samples provided to NETPA.
The results of the 2006 contest were announced Monday.
The Athens Review competed in Division 2, which is reserved for newspapers with circulations of 9,110 or less. The Athens Review’s awards included:
• Page Design, 1st place;
• Advertising, 1st place;

• General Excellence, 2nd place;
• News Writing, 2nd place (Dan Gordon);
• Column Writing, 2nd place (Benny Rogers);
• Feature Photo, 2nd place (Dan Gordon and Kaci Harris);

“It’s exciting that the Athens Daily Review earned this level of recognition in competition with some other very good newspapers,” Athens Review Publisher David Sullens said. “It’s a tribute to the people, both in news and in advertising, who work so hard day in and day out to produce our product.
“My hat is off to them.”
Entry judging for the next NETPA Better Newspaper Contest will begin in January 2008.
