Fuel prices on the rise again
Athens motorists opened the week with gas prices just a few cents below the all time high of two years ago — $2.96.
A survey of stations Monday revealed the most common price across Henderson County was $2.83 per gallon of self-service regular gasoline. On Corsicana Street, the Shamrock, Shell and two Chevron stations were all reporting that price. The price is just under the $2.84 customers were paying locally in May 2006.
Outside of Athens, the Kidd Jones station in LaRue was getting $2.81 for regular fuel. The price in Murchison was a few cents lower at $2.77. The Shell station on East Tyler Street in Athens is advertising $2.79.
George Van Cleave, who sold several area Kidd Jones stations in November 2006, still maintains one store in Seven Points.
“I’m retired, but I think it’s funny when the prices were high a year ago they were blaming the politicians. I’m not hearing that now,” Van Cleave said.
According to Rose Rougeu of AAA of Texas, prices jumped an average of 12 cents around the state last week.
The continuing increase in fuel prices is being driven by low gas inventories that are generally expected at this time of year due to the annual switchover from winter to summer grade gasoline.
“However, the situation is being aggravated by a series of problems at various refineries around the country,” said.
The highest statewide average was $2.964 on Sept. 4, 2005, days after Hurricane Katrina damaged refineries and slowed down the delivery of fuel from the Gulf.
