Athens — A late morning shooting sent portions of Brownsboro Independent School District into lockdown Tuesday.

According to reports, a woman was shot in the 1500 block of County Road 333 in Smith County. The suspect, 29-year old Adrian Mata, fled the scene to the Lake Palestine area.

Reports indicate he was later arrested at 18348 Serenity Way, near The Villages on Farm-to-Market Road 2661.

With the suspect near Chandler, Brownsboro ISD issued a soft lockdown for the two campuses in the city.

“Chandler Intermediate and Chandler Elementary schools were placed on soft lock down in response to a report of a shooting in Smith County,” BISD Superintendent Dr. Chris Moran said.

“No students were in danger and district law enforcement, in cooperation with Chandler Police, monitored the campuses throughout the afternoon.

“Once the school was notified by law enforcement that the suspect was in custody, school officials continued the normal activities of the school day.”

The shooting happened around 11 a.m. Tuesday. A Hispanic female was transported to the hospital where, reports indicate, she later died.

The victim, 31-year old Jennifer Ramirez Mata, was allegedly shot by her husband. Mata has three children, ages 11, 6 and 2.

County Road 333, also known as Poplar Road, is located just outside the Tyler city limits.

The suspect was taken into custody around 2:40 p.m. and booked into Smith County Jail.
