Henderson County exhibitors took home numerous honors at the East Texas State Fair Junior Livestock Show in Tyler Sept. 20 through Sept. 28.
County 4H and FFA members showed winners in many several classes and were among the reserve grand champions at the event. Steers and heifers from the county were some of the strongest entries.
The Junior Steer Show saw three Henderson County exhibitors come away with reserve breed champion awards. Sara Rimpel of Athens FFA, Nathan Johnson of Malakoff FFA and Jordyn Costlow of Eustace FFA were among the six breed champions.
The Junior Steers English Breeds reserve breed champion winners included one Henderson County exhibitor, Haley Barnett, although she competed with the Anderson County 4-H. She took the honors with a polled Hereford.
In the American Breeds, a reserve breed winner was Jordyn Costlow of Eustace FFA.
In the Rabbit Show, the best of opposite junior rabbit winners included three Henderson County entries. Casie Spivey of Eustace FFA, Tabatha Crook of LaPoynor FFA and Cassiddy Petty of Henderson County 4-H took home the ribbons. Best of Breed winners among the Jr. Rabbits included Garrett Nuckolls of La Poynor FFA and Cassiddy Petty from Henderson County 4-H.
Junior Steer Show class winners from the Henderson County area included: Jordan Costlow, Eustace FFA; Jill Odom, Mabank FFA; Kendell Tanner, Mabank FFA; Taylor Davis, Brownsboro FFA; Haley Barnett of Athens, Anderson County FFA; Sara Rimpel, Athens FFA; Lane Smith, Eustace FFA; Madalyn Mikkelsen, Athens FFA; Nathan Johnson, Malakoff FFA and Matt Carter, Malakoff FFA.
The livestock show brought contestants from counties around East Texas and some out-of-state entries in the open divisions. Haley Calhoun of Athens won reserve grand champion in the Texas Longhorn Show for non-haltered, mature females. Calhoun was also first-in-class for mature females born in 2005 or earlier. She also took reserve-grand for haltered, mature females. Her entry in haltered females born from May to June, 2013 was another class winner for Calhoun.
In the open Bradford division, Robert Mills of Athens won for his grand-champion bull and grand-champion senior bull. His entries were also named grand-champion bull calf and heifer calf. Pepper Townsend of Malakoff came away a winner in her heifer-calf class.
The open-goat show had another class winner from Athens. Judy Hill won for the best pair fullblood doe kids less than one year and best pair of fullblood doe kids less than one year with both sexes represented.
