October big month for fun

Many happenings in Henderson County

Athens — The fall weather brings out the best in Henderson County. From the annual Halloween at the Mabank Pavilion to the United Way Hawaiian Cheeseburger in Paradise at the Farmers Market, the possibilities of unique fun in Henderson County are endless. 

If you can't find something to do in October, you are not trying very hard. The Athens Review has rounded up as many of the events we could find. Starting with the first day of October there will be the Victim Abuse Awareness Proclamation at the west side of the Henderson County Courthouse at noon. A proclamation will be signed and State Rep. Lance Gooden will be a speaker at the event.

Friday, Oct. 4-6

It’s the underground MX Park ATV Pro Challenge. It’s a challenge in the memory of Caleb Moore. The Underground MX Park is located in Kemp. For more information go to

Saturday, Oct. 5

Cheese Burger in Paradise. It’s food, fun and music. There will be Hawaiian Cheeseburger sliders, tropical shave ice, line dancing and limbo. There’s also the Farmers Market at the City Parking Lot in Athens. This is a United Way fundraiser.

The Henderson County Veteran's Memorial Benefit will be staged with all funds obtained from this benefit going to the Henderson County Veteran's Memorial Wall fund. Admittance is free. There will be live music by the Starks and many guest musicians. Food and drinks will be available with a donation. It will be at the East Texas Arboretum, 1601 Patterson Road, Athens. At the Grace House of Cedar Creek Lake, there will be a dinner, Silent and Live Auction from  6:30-9:30 p.m. Live Entertainment will be provided by Jon Rutherford at the Lone Star Ranch, 1232 VZ CR 2903, Eustace. For information, call 903-288-7494. This event will raise money for the Grace House located in Tool.

National Night Out – The Mabank Police Department will host annual National Night Out at the Mabank Pavilion from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be raffles, clowns, food, education and family activities including a donut eating contest. For information, contact 903-887-8500.

Friday, Oct. 11

Pinnacle Women's Club Annual Garage Sale at the Mabank Pavilion. All proceeds from the sale go to local charities and non-profit organizations. The sale starts at 7 a.m.

Woodz of Terror, a haunted hayride hosted by the Payne Springs Fire Rescue. This will be each Friday and Saturday night in October. Tickets are $7. The oncession stand will be open. It starts at dark and runs until the last trailer leaves the woods. The ride starts at the Payne Springs Fire Station.

East Texas Crisis Center Wine and Cheese Event. Texas Style Wine & Cheese Party 6 p.m. will be at Stone Oak Ranch Murchison.  It’s a wonderful evening of food, wine, music and live and silent auction. Tickets are $30 per person. East Texas Arboretum's Annual Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For the best family fun in town, call 903-675-5630 for information.

The Ranch Academy 1st Golf Tournament.   It will be held at 4 p.m. at Twin Lakes Golf Course, and there will be a two person scramble, along with dinner, awards and prizes. For information, contact 903-479-3601.

Annual Lord's Acres Harvest Festival at First United Methodist Church in Mabank. The Country Store is open from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be a silent auction and children's activities. It is located at State  Highway 198 in Mabank. Call 903-887-3691 for information.

Low-Cost vaccination clinic hosted by the Friends of the Animals from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  It’s located at the corner of Highways 198 and 334 in Gun Barrel City. Rabies shots are $10. Credit, debit, cash and checks accepted.

Thursday, Oct.17

Cedar Creek Lake Fall Business Expo at the Mabank Pavilion. The event will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Sponsors packages include booth space and many other perks available. It’s open to the public. For more information, call 903-887-3152.

Saturday, Oct. 19

Annual Classic Auto Show at Dairy Queen of Seven Points from noon to 4 p.m. It’s a benefit for the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake.

The Merchant Movie special screening at the Mabank Pavilion. Show time is 7:30 p.m.  to 11:30 p.m. Mike Hall from Mabank stars in the movie.

Ranchel's Happy Feet Ride for the Shoes. The event is ponsored by God Ministries a Biker Friendly Church. Admission is one pair of new shoes. There will be efreshments and hot dogs, along with bounce houses. Rachel is collecting shows for children in Henderson County who have no shoes.

Wednesday, Oct. 23 and Thursday, Oct. 24

Rotary of Cedar Creek Lake's Klothes for Kids event. Volunteers are needed to help shop for winter clothing for Mabank students. Contact Erin Osborn to volunteer at  903-887-7486.

Saturday, Oct. 26

Lake Athens Baptist church Fall Festival. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Church Family Event Center. There will be food, games, bounce house, hayride, door prizes and much more. Bring your children and enjoy the evening.

Gun Barrel City Fall Festival is an all day event at the Gun Barrel Pavilion. Activities include Arts and Crafts booths, poker run, brisket cook off, lawnmower races and concert. It is hosted by the Gun Barrel City Fire Department.

Rocking Country Church will host a Chili Cook-off and Pie Auction. Proceeds will be donated to the Tool Volunteer Fire Department. Family fun with bounce houses, cake walk, 50/50 raffle and music. Call Mary Wennerstrom with questions, 903-603-4422.

Make A Difference Day hosted by the Rotary Club of Cedar Creek Lake. A recycle bin will be at the Mabank Pavilion. No residency required. Object of Make a Difference day is to make a difference in someone's life. Contact Abdul Abdin for more information at 469-951-2234.

Cowboy Breakfast. Chuck wagon will be coming to Mabank behind First State Bank from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $100. The fundraiser is to raise new computers for the library.

Thursday, Oct. 31

Halloween at the Mabank Pavilion. 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. So many children look forward to this Tick or Treat event. Candy donated by local businesses.

Faith Fellowship Fall Festival. 6 pm to 8pm. Bounce Houses, cookie walk, petting zoo, hayride, game booths, door prizes and lot of candy. Located at 5330 U.S. Hwy 175 East in Athens. Call 903-677-3034 for more information.
