Cedar Creek Lake — Save the day Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013. For more than 20 years, USA WEEKEND Magazine and Points of Light have joined together to sponsor Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. Millions of volunteers around the world unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others.  The Rotary Club of Cedar Creek Lake have joined USA Weekend and Points of Light for the past 11 years hosting Make A Difference Day in Henderson County.

“We want to make a difference if only for one day in someone's life,” said Rotarian Andrea Pickens. Pickens has been instrumental in the Make A Difference project since the Cedar Creek Lake Rotary Club started hosting it. Pickens said “There are many things you can do or maybe we can help someone you know.”

The CCL Rotary Club hosted a kick-off luncheon on Friday for the upcoming event. Some of the organizations needing help included the Good Samaritan Food Pantry, Eustace Food Pantry and Cedar Creek Lake Humane Society. While other organizations came to the luncheon to say thank you or say they would be doing projects for the day.

Once again this year the Kaufman County Environmental Co-OP will be available on Oct. 26 for recycling electronics and paper shredding at the Mabank Pavilion. This event is hosted by the  Cedar Creek Lake Rotary Club.  Residence will not be required on this day for the recycling or paper shredding.  Everyone is welcome to bring their electronics for recycling, they are not equipped to take larger items such as refrigerators and washer and dryers.  For more information on the recycling effort call 972-524-0007.

The Cedar Creek Lake Humane Society who in recent weeks have gone through some financial difficulties  brought a wish list to the luncheon. Some of the items the humane society can use are Clorox bleach, laundry soap, paper towels, dish soap, heavy duty 40 gallon trash bags, canned dog food, cat litter, fiber brooms, mops, long handled scrub brushes, blankets and towels. The humane society also have larger needs such as washer and dryer, riding lawn mower, office computer and monitor and a utility van for animal transport. All donations to the animal shelter are tax deductible. Spokesperson for the Humane Society, Leslie Casey, said the shelter has raised $13,000 in the past few weeks, but that is just the start.  Casey said the humane society needs to find a long term solution for it's financial problems.

Pickens said “There are a lot of needs in our county if we can make someone's life a little easier that is all we can ask.” Pickens said she wanted to thank everyone who helped with the Rotary Celebrity Waiter event. “Events such as Celebrity Waiter gives the Rotary the money to have events such as the Klothes for Kids scheduled for Oct. 24.” “The Rotary Club spends over $5000 on winter clothing for children in need,” she said.
